Kavaan flies to Cambodia
Kavaan is a lone elephant at Islamabad zoo, ready to fly to
Cambodia to start a new journey of his life. He will be kept in a 25,000 acre sanctuary,
freely to roam around with other elephant fellows.
Kavaan was gifted to the daughter of Gen. Zia-ul-Haq, during
his visit to Sri Lanka in 1985. He spend 35 years of his life in
Islamabad Zoo. In 2012, Kavaan was given a partner named “Saheli” but unfortunately
she died due to bad weather conditions and carelessness of the zoo staff. He is
alone since then. Finally in May 2020, Islamabad High Court took notice of it
and ordered all animals at Islamabad zoo to be shifted to better homes. The global
animal welfare organization Four Paws is taking part for this transfer. “Asian elephants
can live upto 80 years. Kavaan has had a difficult life. We can only hope that
with proper care he will live long.” said by the spokesperson of Four Paws Ms.
Hannah Baker, crossing her fingers. Journalist and writer Eric Margolis donated
$400,000 to help Four Paws meet travel expenses. American pop singer Cher Free
the Wild led the campaign for elephant’s freedom. She visited the Zoo, sing
there and clicked some pictures with Kavaan. Kavaan is no less than a
celebrity. Senator Faisal Javed said in an apologetic tone ”It is a matter of
shame that we could not car for Kavaan, the affectionate elephant who has brought
so much joy in the lives of the children and adults alike.”
